Chiapas Mexico: San Cristobal De Las Casas
At the southern tip of Mexico sits the region of Chiapas. Chiapas, Mexico is arguably the most beautiful part of Mexico and surely the poorest. This region is an outdoor lovers dream consisting of: lush jungle, friendly people, and cheap cheap options.
Where exactly is Chiapas?
Chiapas is the southernmost state of Mexico bordered to its north and east by Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Tabasco while to the south, Guatemala. San Cristobal, the states capital, city sits low geographically, but high in altitude at 7,300 feet.
What is the Climate in Chiapas like?
The mountainous region of Chiapas provides a clean crisp air. At 7300 feet above sea level, the altitude is not a game. The days are hot and the evenings brisk and chilly. Do not forget a jacket here or you will pay for it, literally.
What can I do in San Cristobal De Las Casas?
San Cristo offers travelers an array of options. For starters, the best option is too walk the city! The city is charming and best explored by foot. The vast amount of small businesses and colorful storefronts will provide you endless hours of wandering. One of my favorite artists, Little Eyes Alien, resides here and she has numerous pieces throughout the city. Make sure you check her work out.
Go Hike. One of the hikes I’m mentioning isn’t well advertised and also not the easiest to find. I was curious one day about a mountain range at the edge of the city and started following a trail until it eventually led to an incredible lookout.
Sumidero Canyon. This canyon is insane! A must visit location and a top spot in all of Mexico. Take a boat ride through the canyon to experience the grand vastness of this natural phenomenon.
Where can I stay in San Cristo?
Fortunately, San Cristo has endless budget accommodations. I mean almost too many. You can expect too pay less than $4/night for a hostel here. Some of the hostels I spent some time in were not only very comfortable but filled with incredible artwork. The majority of budget options are well located within the city too!
