Here are some things that can help with cold water therapy.

  • Groups/Lifeguard – Join this group or bring someone to be your lifeguard. Strength in numbers is especially true during these moments
  • Enter/Exit Plan – Depending on your location, it might be tricky to get in and out of the water. Protect yourself with a plan
  • Cold Water Wetsuit – Not ready for full exposure? Start with a wetsuit. After try with gloves and booties. Read your body and it’s signals 
  • Start Slow – Cold Shock Response is real. The body is going to hyperventilate, the heart rate will increase, and blood pressure will rise. Control your body and continue breathing
  • Breathing Technique – Nasal breathing is the optimal way to enhance your experience. Deep breaths through the nose and out of the mouth. 
  • Stay Sober – Refrain from pre dip alcohol consumption

The best way to warm yourself up after cold exposure is to breathe and completely dry yourself off. 

The next step is to continue your controlled breathing with some calisthenics to increase blood flow throughout the body. 

Jumping jacks, pushups, and body squats are all excellent options.

Cold adaptation takes time and practice. 

By constantly immersing yourself into the practice you can become used to cold water swimming quicker than you think!
