Salento’s Valle De Cocora is a must-visit spot for anyone traveling throughout Colombia. Nature enthusiasts will immediately feel at home, while city dwellers will wish they booked more time in this lovely region.
The saying in Salento goes, “If the Wax Palm Trees don’t keep you here, the coffee will.”
Actually, that’s not what they say but let’s uncover what you need to know about experiencing Valle De Cocora in the Coffee Triangle of Colombia.
How to get from Salento to Valle De Cocora
Make your way to the Salento Plaza in the middle of town to get a Willy (Jeep) to the Cocora Valley. The jeeps hold 15 and leave daily from 7:30 am to 2:30pm.
Expect to pay about 3400 COP ($1USD).
The process is VERY EASY.
Cocora Valley Hike
Hiking the Cocora Valley has a number of different options, but I highly recommend doing the 5-hour hike.
You can elect for the clockwise route but I would recommend the counterclockwise route as you end up in the stunning valley of palm trees to conclude your hike.
Weather in Salento Region
Like anywhere, the weather can vary and drastically alter an experience. I experienced just about every variability of weather besides snow.
- Rain that came and went at a moments notice.
- Sun that shined and quickly usurped the rain.
- Fog that lingered on the hillsides allowing dramatic displays of color contrasts. The fog that made this constant game of peekaboo with the wax palms tree tops.
All together it was a blessing to have a mix of all weather types in such a special place.
Best Things to do in the Salento Region
Visiting the Cocora Valley is certainly one of the best things you can do when in Salento but there are also a ton of other things travelers overlook when visiting.
Here are some of the Best Things to do in Salento:
- Coffee Tours – The Salento region is in the Coffee triangle meaning some of the country’s best coffee originates from this area. You would be remiss to not visit a coffee plantation for some of the fresh good stuff
- Mountain Biking – Get extreme and move yourself on two wheels throughout this mountainous region.
- Hiking – Get moving!
- Tejo – Some great local spots to play this traditional Colombian game
