Paragliding in Medellin: How and Where to Go (2020)
It wasn’t until I arrived to Colombia that I heard about the opportunity to go paragliding or “parapente“. The primary topics of the country had always revolved around coffee, the beautiful women, its drug filled past & the recent surge in tourism. The newest addition to this list is: Paragliding in Medellin.
Where can I go paragliding in Medellin?
You can go paragliding in Medellin in San Felix. San Felix is located just outside of the city and is very easy too get to. Depending on traffic and transportation options, timing could be anywhere between 45 minutes to 2 hours
How do I get too my paragliding in Medellin experience (GTOPIK)?
GTopik offers a door to door transport service that will cost $100,000 COP ($30 USD) for up to 4 people. This is an expensive option if you’re going solo or are on a budget.
Budget transport options for getting to GTOPIK Paragliding:
- Metro to Caribe station (North station) – roughly 3 mil pesos
- Buy 45 minute bus ticket to San Felix – 3,200 mil or express 4,700 mil pesos
- Tell Driver “El Voladero” – The lower launch area is right on the side of the road
Or take UBER.
Arrival and Pre-Flight Set Up
GTopiks check in area is adjacent to the main road, making it almost impossible to miss. The office is on the second floor and is self explanatory to find when you arrive.
The Pre Flight process is very easy and professional with GTopik. Make your payment, sign your waivers and watch a brief pre flight safety video. Post video you will gather your courage and begin the climb up these arduous stairs to the launch zone.
Launch Zone Process
After catching your breath from the scenery & stairway to heaven, you need to check in with the launch zone staff. I’m certain that they used these stairs to dissuade anyone who was on the fence about doing this activity as it gave you that “am I really going through with this?”. Depending on day and crowds, wait times can vary. However for myself and Gibbo, we were up in the air within 7 minutes of arrival.
The zone was nothing but good energy & roughly 70 people partaking, waiting, watching & biting fingernails.
How much does it cost to go paragliding in Medellin?
The cost of paragliding in Medellin at GTopik is: 130,000 COP ($40) for 15 minutes! Each additional 5 minutes = 30000 COP ($10)
Are there any Photo or Video Services included?
No! No photo or video services included! But, you can bring your own gear up at your own risk OR you can choose to rent their gear to capture the memories. The photo/video package costs an additional $15 and includes a selfie stick, 8GB memory card and GoPro equivalent camera. Most people do this, especially for their first time.
Did I Forget to Mention?
We made it back safely so I could write this for you 🙂
Is Paragliding in Medellin Worth it?
Some of the best money I have ever spent, aside from buying the ticket to get to Colombia. It may seem like a budget breaker but comparatively this price and scenery cant be matched.
If something happens & you get cold feet, the scenery at GTopiks launch zone & office area are more than worth your time. The landscape, energy & fresher mountain air make the voyage unforgettable.
Birthday month? Video & photo package covered in your month. Feliz cumpleaños for your Medellin Paragliding experience.
Found a cheaper price? GTOPIK wants your business & will price match whatever that cost is to get you to experience Medellin Paragliding at its best.
And now I know what everyone has been thinking the whole time while reading this…….
Is Paragliding Safe?
For those who aren’t biting the bait right away & have to get talked into it, yes it’s safe. All activities have their dangers but the professionalism & certifications of these pilots make everything smoother than grandmas butter.
