Jumping into Lake Superior

One of the best things to experience in Marquette is Cliff Jumping at Black Rocks!

The Black Rocks cliff jump is about 20-30 feet and is an amazing experience to plunge into Lake Superior on a hot summer day.

Yes, the water is freaking cold but oh so enjoyable to swim at Black Rocks surrounded by geologic beauty and lush verdant trees.

And yes, even some brave souls like Michigan Surf Legend, Surfer Dan, jump in the winter when it’s area is not frozen.

Before jumping, please be careful of slipping, jumping on rocks, other humans, or more, because yes, this jump does pose a risk.

Although quite safe, don’t let your guard down when taking your leap of faith.

Directions to Marquette's Black Rocks

Getting to Black Rocks at Presque Isle from downtown is only about 10 minutes driving and very easy.

Here are a few options of how to access this Marquette hotspot

  • Park at Sunset Point – Park & walk about 2 minutes to the Black Rocks area. This is the ideal option, however, parking is very limited especially on warm summer days
  • Park at “the Zoo” and Walk about 7 minutes – On the west side of Presque Isle is “the Zoo”. This is a fantastic option especially if you have driven around the Isle and weren’t able to find a place at Sunset Point. Parking is much more abundant, although not infinite.
  • Park at the entrance loop –  The Southeastern area or the beginning of Presque has plentiful parking options & is a great option for those who don’t mind making the easy but longer walk in.
  • Bike from Town – Take a 4 mile bike ride that is a casual cruise along the shores of Lake Superior. We love riding this as it’s paved and provides amazing shoreline views of the Big Lake!
